History of Milton, GA

Northern Georgia, which includes Fulton County, was initially part of the Cherokee Indian Country. Native American Cherokee Indians and European settlers resided in tranquility alongside one another until the State of Georgia appropriated the Cherokee’s land in 1830 and then arbitrarily etched the land into counties and dispersed parcels to bidders through the 1832 land lotto. The rest of the Cherokee Indians ended up being expelled to what is currently Oklahoma on the well known Trail of Tears in 1838-39.

The County of Milton was developed in 1857 out of parts of Cherokee, Cobb and Gwinnett counties. It had been named after Lieutenant Colonel John Milton who had been Georgia’s first secretary of state. John Milton saved Georgia’s official records from devastation by the British throughout the American Revolutionary War and he was elected to office 3 times. The City of Milton derived its name from Milton County.
